Diabetes Care
Data Collection Project
The PDA became actively involved in the first Diabetes Cate Data Collection Project, Asia Pacific, a regional project funded by Novo Nordisk inspired by Europe's own DiabCate Project, aimed to provide an overall picture of the diabetes population teatment and management status in Asia. It is also gave data on local interventions with the intention of improving diabetes care standards heer in the Philippines.
Research become top priority of the PDA started the local research initiatives funded by PDA with generous support of pharmaceutical companies, this provided the members the thrust to start research projects which are relevant, significant, pertinent and applicable to the local setting but of international quality.
The PDA Diabete Workshop has been a continuing project of the society since it was hosted in Legaspi City by the Albay, Camarines and Sorsogon Chapters in 1990.
Led by a faculty composed of the PDA board of directors and eminent guest lecturers, the DiabetesWorkshops are postgraduate or refresher courses for province-based general practitioners and internists. Though didactic sessions group discussions, workshops aim to upgrade doctors' expertise in the management of diabetes and tackle all aspects of the disease from its pathogenesis and management to dealing with acute and chronic complications.
The Diabetes Workshop has metamorphosed from a simple, straightforward workshop into a mini-Conventionwith elaborate exhibits participated in by more companies year after year.. However, from then till now, there was one particular module that was frequently requested to be discussed more lengthily-- Medical Nutrition Therapy. Inspired by this clamor, the PDA, through the Council on Nutrition, decided to offer these spinoff workshops focused specifically on nutrition.
Included in the workshops were segments on making healthy food choices, portion control, calorie monitoring and even on the pros and cons of popular diets. All these aimed to empower participants with the understanding that, with proper planning and a little creativity, calorie-modified diets could still be appealing, delicious and satisfying.
These medical Nutrition Therapy workshops have always been well attended and the combination of the practically of the content with the enthusiasm of the attendees constantly challenges the PDA to continuously adapt to the needs and sustain the interest of the public.
